Societies with such states are either wracked by interreligious or inter-denominational wars or by persecuted minority religious groups. In such cases, not only was there inequality among religions (Christians and Jews) but also among churches of the same religion. ![]() They have historically recognized a particular version of the religion enunciated by a church as the official religion, compelled individuals to congregate for only one church, punished them for failing to profess a particular set of religious beliefs, levied taxes in support of one particular church, and made instruction of the favoured interpretation of the religion in educational institutions mandatory. Why not abandon secularism and become more religion-centered? The short answer is that theocratic states and states with established religions will only perpetuate intra- and interreligious domination. Also, many of these states have formally or informally established religions, and establishment of a single religion, even of the weaker variety, is part of the problem not the solution.
